Jakob Kaiser House:
the areas planned by
different architects

The planning of the Jakob Kaiser House as the central accommodation for the parliamentary representatives has been guided by the considerations of critical reconstruction for the reinvigoration of historic urban structures. The Dorotheenstadt, which was founded in 1674 by the Kurfürstin Dorothea, and was originally a quarter where development was on the basis of individual lots, has been taken up by a consortium of architects, and given modern expression with four planning areas in two blocks resulting in eight groups of buildings.

The design offices of Schweger & Partner, Busmann + Haberer GmbH, von Gerkan, Marg & Partner, de Architekten Cie and van den Valentyn have aimed at maintaining the individual character of specific areas by adopting different approaches to the design, while at the same time working on a unified technical basis.

By integrating the chamber of technology, the former bank building -105 Dorotheenstrasse and the historic parts of the residence of the Reichstag president into the complex, the planners were able to show the importance they attach to the concepts of urban conservation.
