The Chancellor's Garden with the head office building

Building began in January 1997 with the first stage - the construction of an underground garage. In the autumn of the same year the second phase of construction began: this included the office tracts, the main building, the restaurant, the guard room with the ceremonial courtyard and the chancellor's garden.

This stage of construction was concluded with the topping-out ceremony on 22 November 1999. In the following November the northern bridge was brought into place uniting the chancellery park at Moabiter Werder with the garden on the eastern side of the Spree. The complete technical fitting-out of the building and other internal building measures went on until February 2001. Following a brief period of technical adjustments the chancellor's office staff were finally able to move into the new building at the end of April.

The 2 May 2001 saw the ceremonial hand-over of the keys in the course of a solemn act attended by a large number of guests and journalists, as well as the first cabinet meeting in the new office.
